Matt Laws and Stuart Matheson crossed paths while shopping for music equipment in Portsmouth, UK. Upon discovering their shared talent, passion, and creative drive, they joined forces and created the hit track "1998", which entered the UK singles chart at #24, marking the first non-vocal piece of electronic music to make it to the top 40. The song's popularity continued to grow through various remixes by renowned artists such as Paul Van Dyk, Gouryella, and Matt Darey.
Their success led to countless gigs worldwide, with Binary Finary becoming a staple in the trance scene. After years of touring, they took a hiatus, only to return in 2005 with "The Lost Tracks," a collection of works specifically developed for their live shows between 1997 and 2000. When Stuart moved to Australia, he teamed up with Sasha Vatoff to keep the Binary Finary journey alive, touring internationally with new original music and re-makes of classic dance tracks in 2009.
The 20th anniversary remix package of "1998" was released by Armada in late 2018, featuring new remixes by Mark Sixma and Dosem, as well as a mix by the group themselves. The remix hit #1 on the Beatport trance charts shortly after its release, reasserting Binary Finary's place as a dominant force in the music scene after two decades of success. They capped off 2018 with a tour across Europe, culminating in a memorable show at Koko in London, which was a homecoming for Stuart.
Their unwavering thirst for technology has always been a driving force behind Binary Finary, leading to numerous collaborative projects, including their own trance events across Australia and crowdsourcing for vinyl releases. They also created and manage the "Classic Trance" Facebook group, which serves as a platform for fans to come together and share their love for emotive creative music. Binary Finary remains true to their roots and fans, producing multiple collaborations and original releases across various record labels.
